초인종 (The Doorbell)

어느 날 한 신부님이 길을 걷다가 보니, 길 건너편 어떤 집에서 아주 작은 소년이 초인종을 누르려고 안간힘을 쓰고 있었다. 하지만, 그 아이의 키가 너무 작고 초인종이 그에겐 너무 높이 달려 있어서 손이 닿지 않았다. 얼마 동안 소년이 애쓰는 모양을 지켜보며 걸으니, 신부는 소년이 있는 곳에 점점 가까워지고 있었다.

그는 사뿐히 길을 건너 꼬마아이의 뒤쪽으로 다가가서, 자기 손으로 상냥하게 아이의 어깨를 부축하여 확실한 벨소리가 나도록 초인종을 눌러 주었다. 신부가아이의 키와 비슷해지도록 몸을 굽히고, 자비로운 미소를 띠며 물었다, "그럼 이제 무얼 해야하나요, 귀여운 꼬마친구님?"

이에 소년이 대답하였다, "이제 도망쳐야지요!"

The Doorbell

A priest is walking down the street one day when he notices a very small boy trying to press a doorbell on a house across the street. However, the boy is very small and the doorbell is too high for him to reach. After watching the boy's efforts for some time, the priest moves closer to the boy's position.

He steps smartly across the street, walks up behind the little fellow and, placing his hand kindly on the child's shoulder leans over and gives the doorbell a solid ring. Crouching down to the child's level, the priest smiles benevolently and asks, "And now what, my little man?"

To which the boy replies, "Now we run!
