어떤 희귀 도서 수집가가 우연히 한 친구를 만났는데, 그 친구 말이, 먼지투성이의 낡은 상자에서 찾아낸 옛날 성경책 한 권을 방금 내다 버렸다는 것이었다. 그는 그 성경이 '구텐...'인가 뭔가라는 사람이 인쇄한 것이었다고무심코 말했다.

"혹시 '구텐베르크' 아니었나?" 수집가가 숨가쁘게 물었다.

"맞아, 바로 그 이름이었어!"

"이런 바보 천치 같으니! 자넨 세계 최초의 인쇄물 중 하나를 내버린 거야. 최근의 경매에서 그런 책한 권이 50만 불에 팔렸다고!"

"오, 내가 버린 건 그런 거액의 가치가 있는 책이 아닐거야," 친구가 대답하였다, "여백이란 여백은 온통 '마틴 루터'라는 이름의 웬촌놈이 휘갈겨 쓴 낙서투성이였거든."

A Rare Book

A collector of rare books ran into an acquaintance who told him he had just thrown away an old Bible that he found in a dusty, old box. He happened to mention that Guten-somebody-or-other had printed it.

"Not Gutenberg?" gasped the collector.

"Yes, that was it!"

"You idiot! You've thrown away one of the first books ever printed. A copy recently sold at auction for half a million dollars!"

"Oh, I don't think this book would have been worth anything close to that much," replied the man, "It was scribbled all over in the margins by some clown named Martin Luther."
