어떤 사람이 열기구를 타고 날아가던 중 방향을 잃은 것을 깨달았다. 고도를 낮추자 저 아래에 사람이 하나 보였다. 그는 열기구를 조금 더 낮추고 소리쳤다, "미안하지만, 날 좀 도와주시겠오? 30 분 전에 친구와 만나기로 약속을 했는데, 난 여기가 어딘지(내가 어디에 있는지)를 모르겠소."

아래의 사람이 말했다, "예 도와드리죠. 댁은 지금 한 열기구 안에 있고, 이 마당 위 10 미터쯤 되는 공중에 머물러 있어요. 북위 40 내지 42 도, 서경 58 내지 60도 되는 위치에 있고요."

"당신은 분명 엔지니어로군요," 열기구 탄 사람이 말했다.

"그래요," 그 사나이가 대답했다. "어떻게 아셨죠?"

"그러니까," 열기구 탄 사람이 말했다, "당신이 내게 말한 것 하나하나가 기술적으로는 정확하지만, 난 그 정보를 어떻게 써먹을지 도통 모르겠고, 여전히 길을 잃고 있는 것이 사실이니까 말이오."

아래의 사람이 말했다, "댁은 분명 매니저시군요."

"맞아요," 열기구 탄 사람이 대답했다, "근데 어떻게 아셨소?"

"그러니까," 사나이가 말했다, "댁은 자신이 어디에 있는지, 또는 어디로 가고 있는지 모르시지요. 지킬 방안도 없는 약속을 하시고, 제가 댁의 문제를 해결해 주리라 기대하시지요. 사실인즉 댁은 우리가 만나기 전과 정확히 동일한 위치에 계신데, 이제 어쩌면 그게 제(가 열기구 설계를 잘 못한) 탓인가봐요."

Working Team

A man is flying in a hot air balloon and realizes he is lost. He reduces height and spots a man down below. He lowers the balloon further and shouts, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised my friend I would meet him half an hour ago, but I don't know where I am."

The man below says, "Yes. You are in a hot air balloon, hovering approximately 30 feet above this field. You are between 40 and 42 degrees North latitude, and between 58 and 60 degrees West longitude."

"You must be an engineer," says the balloonist.

"I am," replies the man. "How did you know?"

"Well," says the balloonist, "everything you have told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to make of your information, and the fact is I am still lost."

The man below says, "You must be a manager."

"I am," replies the balloonist, "but how did you know?"

"Well," says the man, "you don't know where you are, or where you are going. You have made a promise which you have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. The fact is you are in the exact same position you were in before we met, but now it is somehow my fault."
