아주 자유분방한 성향의 한 여교사가 자기 반 꼬마들에게 자기는 무신론자라고 알려주었다. 그녀는 반 아이들에게 그들도 역시 무신론자들이냐고 물었다. 무신론이 무엇인지는 잘 모르겠지만 선생님과 닮고 싶어서 그들의 손이 번쩍이는 폭죽처럼 공중으로 솟아 올랐다.

그런데 하나만은 예외였다. 루시라는 이름의 귀여운 여자아이는 군중심리에 휩쓸리지 않았다. 선생님이 왜 색다른 결정을 한 거냐고 물었다.

"전 무신론자가 아니니까요."

그러자 선생님이 물었다, "넌 뭔데?"

"저는 크리스천이에요."

이제 선생님이 다소 당황스러워 얼굴이 약간 붉어졌다. 그녀는 루시에게 넌 왜 크리스천이냐고 물었다.

"저기요, 저는 예수님을 알고 사랑하면서 자라왔어요. 엄마도 크리스천이고, 아빠도 크리스천이니까, 저도 크리스천이지요."

교사가 이젠 화가 났다. "그건 이유가 안 돼," 그녀가 큰 소리로 말했다.

"그럼 만약 너의 엄마가 멍텅구리고 아빠도 멍텅구리였다면, 그렇다면 넌 뭐가 되었을까?"

루시가 잠시 주춤하더니 미소를 지으며 말했다, "그랬더라면, 전 무신론자가 되었을 거에요."

An Atheist

A young woman teacher with obvious liberal tendencies explains to her class of small children that she is an atheist. She asks her class if they are atheists too. Not really knowing what atheism is but wanting to be like their teacher, their hands explode into the air like flashy fireworks.

There is, however, one exception. A beautiful girl named Lucy has not gone along with the crowd. The teacher asks her why she has decided to be different.

"Because I'm not an atheist."

Then, asks the teacher, "What are you?"

"I'm a Christian."

The teacher is a little perturbed now, her face slightly red. She asks Lucy why she is a Christian.

"Well, I was brought up knowing and loving Jesus. My mom is a Christian, and my dad is a Christian, so I am a Christian."

The teacher is now angry. "That's no reason," she says loudly.

"What if your mom was a moron, and your dad was a moron. What would you be then?"

Lucy paused, and smiled. "Then," she says, "I'd be an atheist."
