"그래요, 생각나요." 그녀가 대답했다.

남편이 잠시 뜸을 들였다. 적절한 단어들이 쉽게 떠오르지 않았다. "내 차 뒷좌석에서 우리가 사랑을 나누다 당신 아버지에게 들켰던 거 기억나?"

"그럼요, 기억나요." 아내가 남편 곁의 의자에 다가 앉으면서 말했다.

남편이 계속했다. "당신 아버지가 내 면상에 엽총을 들이대고, '내 딸과 결혼할래, 아니면 감옥에서 20 년 썩을래?'하고 말씀하시던것도 생각나?"

"그것도 생각나요," 그녀가 상냥하게 대답했다.

그가 뺨에서 또 눈물을 닦아내면서 말했다, "(그 때 교도소에 갔더라면) 오늘이 출소하는 날인데 말이야."

Marriage or Jail ?

A woman awakens during the night to find that her husband is not in bed. She puts on her robe and goes downstairs to look for him. She finds him sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee in front of him. He appears to be deep in thought, just staring at the wall.
She watches as he wipes a tear from his eye and slowly takes a sip of his coffee. "What's the matter, dear?", she whispers as she steps into the room. "Why are you down here at this time of night?"

Her husband looks up from his coffee, "Do you remember years ago when we were dating, and you were only 16?" he asks solemnly.

"Yes, I do" she replies.

The husband pauses. The words are not coming easily to him. "Do you remember when your father caught us in the back seat of my car making love?"

"Yes, I remember" says the wife, lowering herself into a chair beside him.

The husband continues. "Do you remember when he shoved the shotgun in my face and said, "Either you marry my daughter, or I'll send you to jail for 20 years?"

"I remember that too" she replies softly.

He wipes another tear from his cheek and says, "I would have gotten out today".
