아담과 이브가 말했다, "주여, 저희가 에덴동산에 살 적에는 주님께서 매일 함께 산책도 해주시더니, 이제는 주님을 더 이상 뵙지도 못하고 있나이다. 저희는 쓸쓸한 나머지, 주님께서 저희를 얼마나 사랑하시는지를 기억하기조차도 어렵사옵나이다."
그러자 주께서 말씀하셨다, "그까짓 거라면 문제될 게 없노라! 내 너희를 위하여, 너희와 영원히 함께 하면서 너희에 대한 내 사랑을 일깨워 줄 동료를 하나 만들어 주마. 그러면 너희가 나를 직접 볼 수는 없더라도 나를 사랑하게 될 찌니라. 비록 너희가 이기적이고, 어리석고, 사랑해줄 가치조차 없긴 하다마는, 그렇건 말건, 내가 새로 만들어 줄 이 친구는 너희를 있는 그대로 받아주고, 내가 너희를 사랑하듯이 이 친구도 너희 자신이야 어떻건 간에 너희를 사랑할 것이니라."
이윽고 주께서는 아담과 이브의 친구가 될 새로운 동물을 창조하셨다. 참 착한 동물이었다. 주께서 좋아하셨다. 그 새 동물도 아담과 이브의 곁에 있는 것이 좋아서 꼬리를 흔들었다.
그러자 아담이 말했다, "주여, 저는 이미 세상의 모든 동물들에게 이름을 붙여 주었사오나, 이 새로운 동물에겐 뭐라고 이름을 지어 주어야 할지 모르겠나이다."
그러자 주께서 말씀하셨다, "그 또한 문제 아니니라. 내가 너희에 대한 내 사랑을 반영하려고 이 동물을 만들었으니, 그 이름은 나 자신의 이름(GOD)을 그대로 반영하여 DOG(개)라고 부르면 되느니라."
그리하여 개는 아담과 이브와 더불어 살면서 그들의 친구가 되고 그들을 사랑하였다.
그래서 그들은 평안하였다.
주께서 보시기에 좋았다.
개도 만족스러워 꼬리를 흔들었다.
얼마 후, 한 천사가 주께 다가와 아뢰었다, "주님, 아담과 이브가 온통 거만해졌나이다. 마치 무슨 공작이라도 되는 양 뽐내고 우쭐대는 꼴이, 자기들이 사랑 받을 자격이 있다고 믿나 봅니다. 개는 과연 주님의 의도대로 그들에게 그들이 사랑 받고 있음을 가르쳤지만요, 그러나 좀 지나치게 잘 대해 주는 게 아닌가 싶사옵니다."
그러자 주께서 말씀하셨다, "그런 거라면 아무 문제 없느니라! 내가 그들에게, 영원히 매력을 풍기면서도 그들의 실체를 있는 그대로 들여다볼 줄 아는 새 동료를 만들어 주겠노라. 그 친구는 그들에게 그들의 한계가 어디까지인지를 일깨워 줄 것인즉, 그들은 자신들이 항상 사랑 받을만한 가치가 있는 것은 아니라는 사실을 깨닫게 될 것이니라."
그리고 주께서는 CAT(고양이)를 아담과 이브의 친구로 창조하셨다. 고양이는 그들에게 호락호락 복종하려들지 않았다. 그리고 아담과 이브가 고양이의 눈을 들여다볼 때면, 자신들이 최고의 존재는 아니라는 사실을 새삼 깨닫곤 하였다. 그래서 아담과 이브는 겸손이라는 덕목을 배우게 되었다.
그리하여 그들의 성품이 대단히 향상되었다.
주께서 보시기에 좋았다.
개도 행복하였다.
고양이는그까짓 거야 아무러면 어떠냐는 듯 어영부영 지낼 수 있었다.

Where do pets come from
A newly discovered chapter in the Book of Genesis has provided the answer to "Where do pets come from?" Here is the text, translated from the Aramaic original:
Adam and Eve said, "Lord, when we were in the garden, you walked with us every day. Now we do not see you anymore. We are lonesome here and it is difficult for us to remember how much you love us."
And God said, "No problem! I will create a companion for you that will be with you forever and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will love me even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish or childish or unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in
spite of yourselves."
And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam and Eve. And it was a good animal. And God was pleased. And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and Eve and he wagged his tail.
And Adam said, "Lord, I have already named all the animals in the Kingdom and I cannot think of a name for this new animal."
And God said, "No problem. Because I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name and
you will call him DOG."
And Dog lived with Adam and Eve and was a companion to them and loved them.
And they were comforted.
And God was pleased.
And Dog was content and wagged his tail.
After a while, it came to pass that an angel came to the Lord and said, "Lord, Adam and Eve have become filled with pride. They strut and preen like peacocks and they believe they are worthy of adoration. Dog has indeed taught them that they are loved, but perhaps too well."
And God said, "No problem! I will create for them a companion who will bewitch them forever and who will see them as they are. The companion will remind them of their limitations, so they will know that they are not always worthy of adoration."
And God created CAT to be a companion to Adam and Eve. And Cat would not obey them. And when Adam and Eve gazed into Cat's eyes, they were reminded
that they were not the supreme beings. And Adam and Eve learned humility.
And they were greatly improved.
And God was pleased.
And Dog was happy.
And Cat could care less one way or the other.
