한 부유한 노 마님이 반려견 푸들을 친구삼아 데리고 아프리카로 사파리 촬영 여행을 가게 되었다. 

어느 날 푸들이 나비들을 쫓아다니다가 이내 길을 잃은 사실을 깨달았다. 이리저리 헤매던 중, 배고파 보이는 표범 한 마리가 자기 쪽을 향해 빠르게 다가오는 걸 눈치챘다. 푸들이 생각하였다, "어, 어렵쇼!" 근처의 땅 위에 몇 개의 뼈다귀들이 있는 게 보이자, 재빨리 엎드려 다가오는 표범을 등진 자세로 그 뼈들을 씹었다. 

표범이 덮치려는 찰나, 푸들이 크게 소리쳤다, "야아, 참 맛 좋은 표범이었어! 이 근처에 또 있지 않을까?" 

그 말을 들은 표범이 공격의 절정에서 동작을 멈추고는, 공포감이 엄습하여 나무숲 속으로 슬며시 도망쳤다. "휴우!" 표범이 말했다, "아슬아슬했어! 하마터면 그 푸들에게 잡아먹힐 뻔 했잖아!" 

한편, 근처 나무 위에서 그 장면을 다 지켜본 원숭이 하나가 이 지식을 잘 활용하면 표범을 무서워 할 필요가 없겠다는 생각을 하였다. 그리고는 그 자리를 벗어나, 매우 빠른 속력으로 표범을 뒤쫓는 그 원숭이를 본 푸들은 무슨 일이 벌어질 것만 같은 생각이 들었다. 

원숭이가 곧 표범을 따라잡더니 콩열매를 흩뿌리며 표범 앞에서 으쓱대었다. 자기를 조롱하는 데에 격분한 표범이 말했다, "이놈, 원숭아, 내 등에 올라타면 내가 그 푸들을 잘게 씹어먹는 장면을 보여주마!" 

자, 원숭이를 등에 업고 오는 표범을 보고는 푸들이 생각하였다, "이제 어찌 한담?" 그러더니 도망치는 대신, 공격자들을 아직 못 본 척 등을 돌리고는, 목소리가 들릴 정도로 그들이 접근할 때까지 기다렸다. 

"그 망할 원숭이 녀석은 어디 있는 거람?" 푸들이 말했다, "표범을 한 놈 더 데려오라고 내보낸지 한 시간이나 됐는데 말야!"

A Poodle in Africa

A wealthy old lady decides to go on a photo safari in Africa, taking her poodle along for company. 

One day the poodle starts chasing butterflies and before long, discovers that he's lost. Wandering about, he notices a hungry-looking leopard heading rapidly in his direction. The poodle thinks, "Uh, oh!" Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat. 

Just as the leopard is about to leap, the poodle exclaims loudly, "Boy, that was one delicious leopard! I wonder if there are any more around here?" 

Hearing this, the leopard halts his attack in mid-strike, a look of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees. "Whew!" says the leopard. "That was close! That poodle nearly had me!" 

Meanwhile, a monkey who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the leopard. So off he goes, but the poodle sees him heading after the leopard with great speed, and figures that something must be up. 

The monkey soon catches up with the leopard, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the leopard. The leopard is furious at being made a fool of and says, "Here, monkey, hop on my back so you can watch me chew that poodle to bits!" 

Now, the poodle sees the leopard coming with the monkey on his back and thinks, "What am I going to do now?" but instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn't seen them yet, and waits until they get just close enough to hear. 

"Where's that damn monkey?" the poodle says. "I sent him off an hour ago to bring me another leopard!"
