지방판사가 피고에게 음주의 나쁜 점들에 관하여 훈계하였다.그러나 그 사람이 이번 처음으로 술에 취하여 실수하였음을 참작하여, 벌금 10 실링만 받고 그 사건은 기각되었다.

"이제 두 번 다시 내가 당신의 얼굴을 보는 일이 없도록 하시오," 피고를 석방하면서 재판장이 준엄하게 말했다.

"그 약속은 못 해 드릴 것 같은데요, 판사님," 석방된 사나이가 말했다.

"아니 왜 못 한단 말이오?"

"제가 판사님의 단골 술집 바텐더니까요!"

First Offense

The local District Judge had given the defendant a lecture on the evils of drink. But in view of the fact that this was the first time the man had been drunk and incapable, the case was dismissed on payment of ten shillings costs.

"Now don't let me ever see your face again," said the Justice sternly as the defendant turned to go.

"I'm afraid I can't promise that, sir," said the released man.

"And why not?"

"Because I'm the barman at your regular pub!"
