어느 날 아놀드와 그의 아내가 다락 청소를 하다가 동네 구두수리점의 보관증 한 장을 찾아냈다. 거기 찍힌 날짜를 보니 11 년 이상 묵은 거였다. 그들은 서로 웃으며, 두 사람 중 누가 10여 년 전에 구두수선을 맡겨 놓고 여태 찾아오는 걸 잊은 것일까 기억해내 보려고 애를 썼다.

"그 구두가 아직도 그 가게에 있을까?" 아놀드가 물었다.

"그럴 가능성은 거의 없겠죠," 아내가 말했다.

"한 번 알아보는 것도 괜찮겠군," 아놀드가 그 보관증을 호주머니에 넣으며 말하고는, 아래층으로 내려가 차를 타고 그 가게로 향했다.

그가 정색을 하고 그 보관증을 계산대 직원에게 내밀었다. 직원도마찬가지로 정색을 하며 말했다, "잠간만 기다리세요. 제가 찾아 볼께요."

그가 가게 뒷편의 컴컴한 구석으로 사라졌다.

2 분 후, 그가 큰 소리로 불렀다, "여기 있네요!"

"농담 아니세요?" 아놀드가 큰 소리로 대꾸하였다. "그거 참 대단하군요! 그게 아직까지도 여기에 있으리라고 누가 생각이나 하겠어요?"

직원이 빈 손으로 계산대에 돌아왔다.

"목요일까지 수선을 끝내 놓겠습니다," 그가 차분하게 말했다.

Shoe Repair

Arnold and his wife were cleaning out the attic one day when he came across a ticket from the local shoe repair shop. The date stamped on the ticket showed that it was over eleven years old. They both laughed and tried to remember which of them might have forgotten to pick up a pair of shoes over a decade ago.

"Do you think the shoes will still be in the shop?" Arnold asked.

"Not very likely," his wife said.

"It's worth a try," Arnold said, pocketing the ticket. He went downstairs, hopped into the car, and drove to the store.

With a straight face, he handed the ticket to the man behind the counter.

With a face just as straight, the man said, "Just a minute. I'll have to look for these."

He disappeared into a dark corner at the back of the shop.

Two minutes later, the man called out, "Here they are!"

"No kidding?" Arnold called back. "That's terrific! Who would have thought they'd still be here after all this time?"

The man came back to the counter, empty-handed.

"They'll be ready Thursday," he said calmly.
