한 정비사가 어떤 자동차 엔진으로부터 실린더 헤드들을 떼어내면서 보니, 세계적으로 유명한 심장외과 의사가 자기네 공장에 와 있는 것이었다. 그 의사는 저만큼 비켜 서서 정비사가 자기 차를 보러 와 주기를 기다리고 있었다. 정비사가 차고를 가로질러 소리쳤다, "안녕하세요 박사님, 잠간만 이쪽으로 와보세요."

그 유명한 의사는 약간 놀라면서 정비사에게로 다가왔다. 정비사가 몸을 일으키고, 걸레로 손을 씼고나서 물었다, "그러니까 박사님, 여기 이것좀 보시라고요. 저도 역시 심장을 열고, 밸브들을 꺼내고, 그것들을 주무르고, 새 부속을 끼워 넣고, 제가 이 일을 다 마치면 마치 새것처럼 작동된다고요. 그러니까 박사님이나 저나 기본적으로는 똑같은 일을 하는데 어째서 박사님만 큰 돈을 버시는 겁니까?"

의사가 웃으며, 몸을 기울이고, 정비사에게 속삭였다, "엔진 가동 중에 그 일을 해 보시지 그래!"

Heart surgeon and the mechanic

A mechanic was removing the cylinder heads from the motor of a car, when he spotted the world-famous heart surgeon in his shop. The heart surgeon was standing off to the side, waiting for the service manager to come take a look at his car. The mechanic shouted across the garage, "Hello Doctor, please come on over here for a minute."

The famous surgeon, a bit surprised, walked over to the mechanic where he stood. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked, "So doctor, look at this here. I also open hearts, take valves out, grind 'em, put in new parts, and when I finish this will work just like a new one. So how come you get the really big money, when you and I are doing basically the same work?"

The doctor smiled, leaned over, and whispered to the mechanic, "Try doing it with the engine running!"
