어떤 연구심이 왕성한 여기자가 문화탐방차 아프간에 갔는데, 길을 갈 때 여자는 남자보다 열 걸음 뒤에 떨어져서 걷도록 되어 있다는 사실을 알고는 충격을 받았다. 그녀가 가이드에게 그 이유를 물으니, 가이드 왈, "여자는 상대적으로 신분이 낮다는 인식 때문이죠." 그녀는 홧김에 귀국해 버렸다. 

1 년 후, 그녀는 그 지역의 폭동사태를 취재하기 위하여 다시 거길 갔는데, 이번엔 여자가 열 걸음 앞장서서 걸어가고 있는 것을 보고 깜짝 놀랐다. 그녀가 가이드를 돌아다보고 물었다, "뭐가 바뀐 거죠?" 

가이드의 대답, "지뢰가 묻혀 있는 지역이거든요."

Walking Ahead or Behind

An investigative journalist went to Afghanistan to study the culture and was shocked to discover that women were made to walk ten paces behind the men. She asked her guide why and he said, "Because they are considered of lesser status." Outraged the journalist went home. 

A year later she returned covering violence in the region and was surprised to see the women walking ten paces ahead. She turned to her guide and this time asked, "What has changed?" 

The guide answered, "Land mines."
