다음은 워싱턴 대학의 중간고사 화학시험에 실제로 출제된 문제이다. 답안이 하도 ‘심오하여’ 교수가 동료들에게 배포하였으니, 우리도 한 번 재미삼아 음미해 봄직하다:

[보너스 문제 : 지옥은 열을 방출하는가, 또는 흡수하는가?]

대부분의 학생들은 (기체는 팽창할 때 온도가 내려가고, 압축될 때 온도가 올라간다는) 보일의 법칙을 이용하여 자신의 소견을 논증하거나, 뭐 그런 정도였는데, 한 학생의 답안은 이러하였다:

"먼저, 시간이 흐름에 따라 지옥의 질량이 어떻게 변하는가를 알 필요가 있다. 고로, 우리는 단위 시간 당 몇 개의 영혼들이 지옥을 드나드는지 알아야한다. 내 생각으론 일단 지옥에 도착한 영혼은 지옥을 벗어나는 일이 없으리라고 가정해도 무방하리라 본다. 고로, 어떤 영혼도 지옥으로부터 나가는 일은 없다. 얼마나 많은 영혼들이 지옥에 들어가는가를 알아보기 위하여, 오늘날 세상에 존재하는 갖가지 종교들을 살펴보기로 하자. 자기네 신자가 아니면 지옥에 간다고 선언하는 종교들이 더러 있다. 그런 종교가 적어도 둘 이상은 되고, 누구도 혼자서 둘 이상의 종교를 동시에 가지는 일은 없으므로, 이 두 가지 사실에서 모든 영혼들은 지옥에 간다는 사실을 추론해 낼 수 있다. 현재의 출생률과 사망률에 비추어, 지옥 안의 영혼 수는 지수함수적으로 증가한다고 볼 수 있다. 그럼 이제, 지옥의 체적이 변화하는 속도를 따져보자. 보일의 법칙에 의하면, 지옥의 온도와 압력이 일정하게 유지되기 위해서는 영혼들이 추가됨에 따라 그 체적이 늘어나야한다. 그렇다면 두 가지 가능성을 상정할 수 있다:

그럼 이 중 어느 것이 실제 상황일까? -- 내가 일학년 때 ‘테레사 배년’이란 아가씨가 "너와 잠자리를 함께 하면 지옥의 날씨도 춥진 않을 거야"라고 내게 말한 그 가설을 그대로 수용한다면, 그리고 내가 아직도 그 일에 성공하지 못 하고 있다는 사실을 고려한다면, 그게 (두 가지 가능성 중의 어느 것도) 진실일 리가 없다. 따라서 지옥은 열을 방출하고, 그래도 얼어붙는 일은 없을 것이라 확신하는 바이다."

그 학생만 A학점을 받았다.

The following is an actual question given on a University of Washington chemistry mid term. The answer was so "profound" that the professor shared it with colleagues, which is why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well.

The Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)?

Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools off when it expands and heats up when it is compressed), or some variant. One student, however, wrote the following:

"First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate that souls are moving into Hell and the rate they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Some of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there are more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand as souls are added. This gives two possibilities:

1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose.

2. Of course, if hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.

So which is it? -- If we accept the postulate given to me by Ms. Teresa Banyan during my Freshman year - that, "It will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you," and take into account the fact that I still have not succeeded in doing so, then it cannot be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and will not freeze."

The student received the only "A" given.
