사령관은 그 설명이 매우 의심스러웠지만 아무튼 그가 귀대하였으므로 그냥 보내 주었다. 잠시 후, 8 명의 사병이 헐떡거리며 나타나자, 사령관이 왜들 늦었느냐고 물었다.

"죄송합니다, 사령관님! 제가 데이트를 하느라고 좀 늦어졌습니다. 저는 버스를 타려고 달려갔지만 놓쳐 버리고, 택시를 잡아 탔는데 그게 그만 고장 나 버려서, 농가를 발견하고 말 한 필을 샀는데 그 놈이 고꾸라져 죽어 버리는 바람에, 10 마일을 달려서 지금 도착한 겁니다."

사령관은 매우 의심스러운 눈초리로 그들을 노려보았지만, 이미 첫 번째 녀석을 훈방해 준 터라 그들도 그냥 보내주었다.아홉 번째 병사가 몹시 헐떡거리며 사령관에게 달려왔다.

"죄송합니다, 사령관님! 제가 데이트를 하다가 좀 늦어졌습니다. 버스를 타려고 달려갔지만 놓쳐 버리고, 택시를 잡아 탔는데..."

"내가 맞혀 볼까?" 사령관이 가로막았다, "그게 고장 나 버렸지."

"아닙니다," 사병이 말했다, "도로에 죽어 자빠져 있는 말들이 너무 많아서, 그것들을 피해서 오느라고 한참 걸린 겁니다."

The General went out to find that none of his G.I.s were there. One finally ran up, panting heavily.

The General eyed them, feeling very skeptical but since he let the first guy go, he let them go, too. A ninth G.I. jogged up to the General, panting heavily.

"Sorry, sir! I had a date and it ran a little late, I ran to the bus but missed it, I hailed a cab but..."

"Let me guess," the General interrupted, "it broke down."

"No," said the G.I., "there were so many dead horses in the road, it took forever to get around them."
