한 여인이 오랜투병 끝에 죽어서 천국의 문에 도착하였다.
성 베드루가 마중 나오기를 기다리는 동안, 그녀는 대문 안을 엿보았다.근사한 잔치상이 보였다. 그녀보다 먼저 돌아가신 부모님을 비롯하여 그녀가 사랑했던 모든 이들이 빙 둘러 앉아 있었다.

그들이 그녀를 보더니 "안녕", "잘 있었니! 우린 널 기다리고 있는 중이란다", "만나서 반가워" 등등의 인사를 건네기 시작하였다.

성 베드루가 다가왔을 때 여인이 말했다, "여긴 참 멋진 곳이네요! 제가 어떻게 하면 들어갈 수 있나요?"

"한 단어를 써야해," 성 베드루가 그녀에게 말했다.

"어떤 단어를요?" 여인이 물었다.

"사랑."

여인이 정확한 철자로 "Love"라고 쓰니까 성 베드루는 그녀를 천국으로 반겨 맞아들였다.

6개월쯤 후, 성 베드루가 그 여인에게 와서, 그 날은 자기 대신 천국문을 지켜달라고 부탁하였다.

여인이 천국문을 지키고 있는데, 그녀의 남편이 도착하였다.

"당신을 만나다니 놀랍군요," 여인이 말했다. "그간 잘 지냈어요?"

"오, 당신이 죽은 뒤로 난 꽤 잘 지냈어," 남편이 말했다. "당신 아팠을 때 간호하던 그 예쁜 아가씨와 결혼했지. 그리고는 복권에 당첨됐어. 난 당신과 살던 작은 집을 처분하고 커다란 호화주택을 샀지. 그리곤 부부동반으로 전 세계를 여행하기도 했어. 우린 오늘 휴가를 내어 수상스키를 타러 갔었어. 내가 고꾸라지면서 스키가 내 머리를 치는 바람에 지금 여기 온 거야. 내가 어떻게 해야 들어가지?"

"단어 하나를 써야해요," 여인이 말했다.

"어떤 단어?" 남편이 물었다.

"체코슬로바키아[Czechoslovakia]."

Getting into Heaven

After a long illness, a woman died and arrived at the Gates of Heaven.
While she was waiting for Saint Peter to greet her, she peeked through the Gates. She saw a beautiful banquet table. Sitting all around were her parents and all the other people she had loved and who had died before her.

They saw her and began calling greetings to her- "Hello" "How are you! We've been waiting for you!" "Good to see you".

When Saint Peter came by, the woman said to him, "This is such a Wonderful place! How do I get in?"

"You have to spell a word", Saint Peter told her.

"Which word?", the woman asked.

"Love."

The woman correctly spelled "Love" and Saint Peter welcomed her into Heaven.

About six months later, Saint Peter came to the woman and asked her to watch the Gates of Heaven for him that day.

While the woman was guarding the Gates of Heaven, her husband arrived.

"I'm surprised to see you", the woman said. "How have you been?"

"Oh, I've been doing pretty well since you died", her husband told her. "I married the beautiful young nurse who took care of you while you were ill. And then I won the lottery. I sold the little house you and I lived in and bought a big mansion. And my wife and I traveled all around the world. We were on vacation and I went water skiing today. I fell, the ski hit my head, and here I am. How do I get in?"

"You have to spell a word", the woman told him.

"Which word?", her husband asked.

"Czechoslovakia."
