잘 못 걸려온 전화

지난 수요일 밤, 내가 방에 앉아TV를 보고 있는데 전화 벨이 울렸다.
"여보세요?" 내가 전화를 받았다.

상대 편에서여자 목소리가 들려왔다, "벤 좀 바꿔 주시겠어요?"

난 혼자 살고 , 이름은 물론 벤이 아니다. 잘 못 걸려온 전화 같기에 심술이 났다.

내가 대답했다, "죄송하지만 지금 안 계신데요. 전해드릴 말씀 있으세요?

"몇 시에 돌아올지 아시나요?" 그녀가 반응했다.

"열 시쯤 돌아오겠다고 한 것 같은데요."

저 쪽엔 침묵... 당황한 듯한 침묵이 흘렀다.

"스티브씨세요?"

내 이름은 스티브도 아니다. 잘못 걸린 전화가 분명했다.

그래서 내가 대답했다, "예, 맞아요. 벤에게 전할 말씀이라도?"

"저... 벤이 오늘 밤은 집에 있을 테니 전화해 달라고 했었거든요," 그녀가 약간토라진 목소리로 말했다.

내가 대답했다, "글쎄요, 그 친구가한 시간 전에 캐런하고 외출하면서 10 시에 돌아오겠다고 하던데요."

이제 충격받은 목소리 : "캐런이 누구예요?!"

"그와 함께 외출한 아가씨죠."

"그건 알아요! 제 말은... 그게 도대체 누구냐구요?"

"그 여자 성씨는 몰라요. 이봐요, 벤에게 전할 말씀 있냐니깐요?"

"예... 전해 주세요. 돌아오면 전화 해 달라구요."

이 시점에서 그녀 목소리엔꽤나 노기가 서려 있어서 기분이 들끓고 있음을알 수 있었다.

"꼭 전해 드릴게요. 제니퍼양이시죠?"

그녀가 폭발했다, "제니퍼라뇨?"

물론 제니퍼일 리가 없다.

"저... 그가 열 시에는 제니퍼양과 외출할 예정이었으니까 전 댁이 그 여자인줄 알았죠. 미안... 제가 순진한 실수를 했군요."

"실수한 건 바로 벤이예요! 그에게 앨리스한테서 전화 왔었다고 전해 주시고요, 매우 기분이 잡쳤으니 집에 돌아오는 즉시 전화해달라고 해 주세요."

"내가 웃으며 말했다, "예, 그러죠... 하지만 베키라면 이런 거 안 좋아할 텐데..."

Wrong Number

It was last Wednesday night, and I was sitting in my room watching television when the phone rang.
"Hello?" I said.

A girl's voice came over the line. "Can I speak to Ben, please?"

I live by myself, and my name definitely is not Ben. It was probably a wrong number and I was bored.

I replied, "I'm sorry, he's not in right now. Can I take a message?"

"Do you know what time he'll be back?" she responded.

"I think he said he'd be home around 10:00."

Silence on the other end... a confused silence.

"Is this Steve?"

My name isn't Steve, either. This was definitely a wrong number.

So I replied, "Yes, it is. Do you want to leave a message for Ben?"

"Well... he said he would be home tonight and asked me to call him," she said in a slightly irritated voice.

I replied, "Well, he went out with Karen about an hour ago, and said that he would be back at 10:00."

A shocked voice now: "Who's Karen?!"

"The girl he went out with."

"I know that! I mean... who is she?"

"I don't know her last name. Look, do you want me to leave a message for Ben?"

"Yes... please do. Tell him to call me when he gets home."

She was sounding pretty irate at this point, and I could hear her temper flaring.

"I sure will. Is this Jennifer?"

She exploded, "Who's Jennifer?"

Apparently she wasn't.

"Well... he's going out with Jennifer at 10:00. I thought you were her. Sorry... it was an honest mistake."

"Ben's the one that's made the mistake! Tell him that Alice called him and the she's very upset and that I would like him to call me as soon as he gets home."

I smiled and said, "Okay, I will... but Becky isn't going to like this..."
