어떤 부부가 친지를 방문하려고 시골 길을 운전해 가던 중, 한 진흙탕에 이르자 차가 빠져 꼼짝 못 하게 되었다. 자기들이 차를 빼내 보려고 얼마동안 애쓰다가 보니, 웬 젊은 농부가 소 몇 마리를 몰고 그 길로 오고 있었다.

 

그가 멈춰서 부부가 곤경에 빠진 것을 보더니, 50 달러를 내면 차를 끌어내 주겠다고 제안하였다. 남편이 그 제의를 받아들여, 잠시 후 차는 무사히 빠져나왔다.

 

그 농부가 남편 쪽을 돌아보며 말했다, "에~ 그러니까, 댁의 차가 오늘 제가 진창에서 꺼내준 열 번째 차로군요."

 

남편은 믿기 어렵다는듯 밭을 빙 둘러보고는 농부에게 물었다, "그럼 밭갈이 할 시간은 언제 내시나요? 야간에 하시나요?"

 

"아뇨," 젊은 농부가 진지하게 대답하였다, "밤은 제가 이 진창에 물을 붓는 시간이랍니다."

Ploughing at Night 
 
A husband and wife were driving down a country lane on their way to visit some friends. They came to a muddy patch in the road and the car became bogged. After a few minutes of trying to get the car out by themselves, they saw a young farmer coming down the lane, driving some oxen before him.

 

He stopped when he saw the couple in trouble and offered to pull the car out of the mud for $50. The husband accepted and minutes later the car was free.

 

The farmer turned to the husband and said, "You know, you're the tenth car I've helped out of the mud today."

 

The husband looks around at the fields incredulously and asks the farmer, "When do you have time to plough your land? At night?"

 

"No," the young farmer replied seriously, "Night is when I put the water in the hole"
