한 젊은이가 어느날 밤 자진해서 꼬맹이들을 돌봐주기로 하여 그의 어머니는 저녁 외출을 할 수 있었다. 잠잘 시간이 되자 그는 꼬맹이들을자라고 윗층에 올려 보내놓고 축구 중계를 보려고 편히 앉았다. 꼬맹이 하나가 자꾸만 계단을 기어 내려오고 있었으나 젊은이는 계속해서 그 아이를 윗층으로 돌려보냈다.

9시에, 초인종이 울렸다, 이웃에 사는브라운 부인이었는데, 자기 아들이 거기에 있느냐고 물었다. 젊은이가 무뚝뚝하게 대답하였다, "아뇨."

바로 그 때 난간 너머로 한 꼬마의 얼굴이 나타나더니 소리치는 것이었다, "엄마, 나 여기 있는데 그 사람이 집에 보내주지를 않아요."

Can't Go Home

A young man volunteered to baby-sit one night so his mom could have an evening out. At bedtime he sent the youngsters upstairs to bed and settled down to watch football. One child kept creeping down the stairs but the young man kept sending him back.

At 9pm, the doorbell rang, it was the next-door neighbour Mrs. Brown, asking whether her son was there. The young man brusquely replied, "No".

Just then a little head appeared over the banister and a voice shouted, "I'm here Mom but he won't let me go home."
