어느 부부가 아기를 낳으러 병원에 갔다. 병원에 도착하자, 의사는 분만 시 산모의 고통의 일부를 아기 아빠에게 옮겨줄 수 있는 새로운 기계를 발명했는데, 한번 시험해 볼 의향이 있느냐고 물었다. 부부는 매우 좋다며 찬성했다.

의사는 기계의 '고통 이동' 다이얼을 일단 10%에 맞추면서, 비록 10%지만 아마 아기 아빠한테는 여태 경험한 어떤 고통보다도 더 아플지 모른다고 설명하였다. 그러나 분만이 진행되고 있는데도 남편은 아무렇지도 않다는 표정으로, 의사에게 다이얼을 좀더 높여서 해도 좋다고 말했다.

그리하여 아내는 사실상 아무런 산고도 느끼지 못한 채 건강한 아기를 낳았다. 부부는 기뻐서 어쩔 줄을 몰랐다. 그들이 집에 돌아와 보니, 현관 앞에 우체부가 죽어 있었다.

Child Birth

A married couple went to the hospital to have their baby delivered. Upon their arrival, the doctor said he had invented a new machine that would transfer a portion of the mother's labor pain to the father. He asked if they were willing to try it out. They were both very much in favor of it.

The doctor set the pain transfer dial to 10% for starters, explaining that even 10% was probably more pain than the father had ever experienced before. But as the labor progressed, the husband felt fine and asked the doctor to go ahead and bump it up a notch.

The doctor then adjusted the machine to 20% pain transfer. The husband was still feeling fine. The doctor checked the husband's blood pressure and was amazed at how well he was doing. At this point they decided to try for 50%. The husband continued to feel quite well. Since it was obviously helping out his wife considerably, the husband encouraged the doctor to transfer ALL the pain to him.

The wife delivered a healthy baby with virtually no pain. She and her husband were ecstatic. When they got home, the mailman was dead on their porch.
