노사 협상이 난관에 처하였다. 근로자들이 계약에 명시된 병결(病缺 = 질병으로 인한 결근) 조항을 악랄하게 남용하고 있다는 사실을 노조측은 부정하였다.

 

어느 날 아침 협상테이블에서, 회사측 협상 수석대표가 조간신문을 치켜들었다, "이 사람은," 그가 발표하였다, "어제 병결을 신고하였습니다!"

 

그 신문 스포츠 란에 그 아프다던 근로자의 사진이 나와 있는데, 한 지역 골프대회에서 뛰어난 스코어로 우승하고서 찍은 것이었다.

 

노조측 협상대표 중 한 사람이 실내의 정적을 깨뜨렸다.

 

"와우!" 그가 말했다, "그가 만약 아프지 않았더라면 과연 어떤 스코어를 낼 수 있었을까 상상 좀 해봐요!"

Calling in Sick 
 
Negotiations between union members and their employer were at an impasse. The union denied that their workers were flagrantly abusing the sick-leave provisions set out by their contract.

 

One morning at the bargaining table, the company's chief negotiator held aloft the morning edition of the newspaper, "This man," he announced, "called in sick yesterday!"

 

There on the sports page, was a photo of the supposedly ill employee, who had just won a local golf tournament with an excellent score.

 

A union negotiator broke the silence in the room.

 

"Wow!" he said. "Just think of the score he could have had if he wasn't sick!"
