당신의 복장

셋째 아기: 임산부복은 곧 평상복이다.

 

 

출산준비

 

첫 아기: 호흡법을 경건하게 시행한다.
둘째 아기: 지난번에 그게 별 도움이 안 되었으니, 호흡법에 그다지 신경 안 쓴다.
셋째 아기: 임신 8 개월째에 마취분만을 신청해 둔다.

 

 

아기옷

 

첫째 아기: 신생아복은 미리 세탁해 두고, 색상을 맞추고, 깔끔히 개어서 꼬마 옷장에 보관한다.
둘째 아기: 옷들이 깨끗한가 검사하여 얼룩때가 극심한 옷들만 버린다.
셋째 아기: 사내아이에게 핑크색 옷을 입힌대서, 안 될 게 뭐람?

 

보채기

 

첫째: 칭얼대거나 찡그리는 등 짜증스런 표정이 보이자마자 아기를 안아준다.
둘째: 첫째 아이의 잠을 깨울 정도로 울부짖어야 안아준다.
셋째: 세 살박이에게 기계식 흔들그네 작동법을 가르쳐 준다. 

 

 

고무 젖꼭지

 

첫째: 그게 바닥에 떨어지면, 따로 보관해 두었다가 집에 와서 씻고 끓인다.
둘째: 그게 바닥에 떨어지면, 젖병에서 뿜어나온 액체로 씻어낸다.
셋째: 당신의 셔츠 자락에 쓱 문질러서 다시 물려 준다.

 

 

기저귀

 

첫째: 쌌건 안 쌌건, 한 시간에 하나씩 갈아 채운다.
둘째: 두어 시간마다 한 번씩 점검하여 필요하면 갈아 준다.
셋재: 딴 사람들이 냄새난다고 투덜거리거나 무릎까지 흘러내린 모습이 보이기 전에 갈아 주기로 한다.

 

 

바깥활동

 

첫째: 아기 체조클럽, 아기그네, 및 아기 동화시간에 데리고 다닌다.
둘째: 아기 체조클럽에 데리고 다닌다.
셋째: 수퍼마켓 및 세탁소에 데리고 다닌다.

 

 

외출

 

첫째: 처음으로 아기를 도우미에게 맡기고 외출하면, 집에 다섯 번 전화한다.
둘째: 외출 직전에 자기가 갈 곳의 전화번호를 적어둘 생각이 난다.

셋째: 아기가 피를 흘려야만 연락하라고 도우미에게 일러둔다.

 

 

집에서

 

첫째: 일상의 많은 시간을 단지 아기를 들여다보는 일로만 보낸다.
둘째: 첫째가 둘째를 꼬집거나 찌르거나 때리거나 하지 않는지 감시하는 일에 상당 시간을 소비한다.
셋째: 아이들을 피해 있는 여유시간을 약간은 가진다.

 

 

동전을 삼키면

 

첫째: 병원에 달려가서 엑스레이를 찍어달라고 한다.
둘째: 동전의 통과 경로를 조심스레 관찰한다.
셋째: 그 녀석 용돈 [또는 그 녀석에게 들어가는 돈]에서 공제한다!!

Parenting

Being a parent changes everything. But being a parent also changes with each baby. Here are some of the ways having a second and third child is different from having your first.

 

Your Clothes

1st baby: You begin wearing maternity clothes as soon as your OB/GYN confirms your pregnancy.
2nd baby: You wear your regular clothes for as long as possible.

3rd baby: Your maternity clothes ARE your regular clothes.

 

Preparing for the Birth

1st baby: You practice your breathing religiously.

2nd baby: You don't bother practicing because you remember that last time, breathing didn't do a thing.

3rd baby: You ask for an epidural in your 8th month.

 

The Layette

1st baby: You pre-wash your newborn's clothes, color-coordinate them, and fold them neatly in the baby's little bureau.

2nd baby: You check to make sure that the clothes are clean and discard only the ones with the darkest stains.

3rd baby: Boys can wear pink, can't they?

 

Worries

1st baby: At the first sign of distress - a whimper, a frown - you pick up the baby.

2nd baby: You pick the baby up when her wails threaten to wake your firstborn.

3rd baby: You teach your 3-year-old how to rewind the mechanical swing.

 

Pacifier

1st baby: If the pacifier falls on the floor, you put it away until you can go home and wash and boil it.

2nd baby: When the pacifier falls on the floor, you squirt it off with some juice from the baby's bottle.

3rd baby: You wipe it off on your shirt and pop it back in.

 

Diapering

1st baby: You change your baby's diapers every hour, whether they need it or not.

2nd baby: You change their diaper every 2 to 3 hours, if needed.

3rd baby: You try to change their diaper before others start to complain about the smell or you see it sagging to their knees.

 

Activities

1st baby: You take your infant to Baby Gymnastics, BabySwing, and Baby Story Hour.

2nd baby: You take your infant to Baby Gymnastics.

3rd baby: You take your infant to the supermarket and the dry cleaner.

 

Going Out

1st baby: The first time you leave your baby with a sitter, you call home 5 times.

2nd baby: Just before you walk out the door, you remember to leave a number where you can be reached.

3rd baby: You leave instructions for the sitter to call only if she sees blood.

 

At Home

1st baby: You spend a good bit of every day just gazing at the baby.

2nd baby: You spend a bit of everyday watching to be sure your older child isn't squeezing, poking, or hitting the baby.

3rd baby: You spend a little bit of every day hiding from the children.

 

Swallowing Coins

1st child: when first child swallows a coin, you rush the child to the hospital and demand x-rays.

2nd child: when 2nd child swallows a coin, you carefully watch for coin to pass.

3rd child: when 3rd child swallows a coin you deduct it from his allowance!!
