네가 영화구경을 하고 싶은데 어린 동생이 붙어다닐 땐, 네가 포용해주기 바란다.

네가 고무줄 새총을 갖고 싶어하면, 네 아빠가 그걸 사주는 대신 그걸 만드는 법을 가르쳐주길 바란다.

네가 경작과 독서를 배우기를 바란다.

네가 컴퓨터 사용법을 배울 때, 네 머리로 덧셈과 뻴셈을 하는 법도 역시 배우기를 바란다.

네가 처음으로 이성에게 홀딱 빠졌을 때와 네 엄마에게 아이보리비누 맛이 어떤지 알았다고 말대꾸할 때, 친구들에게서 야유를 당하기를 바란다.

산을 타다 무릎이 까지고, 난로 쪼이다가 손을 데이고, 냉동깃대에 혀를 찔리기도 하기를.

네가 한 번쯤 맥주를 마셔보는 건 신경쓰지 않는다마는, 네가 그걸 좋아하지는 않기를 바란다.

그리고 친구 하나가 네게 마약이나 담배를 권한다면, 그는 진정한 친구가 아님을 네가 깨닫기 바란다.

네가 시간을 내어 동네 할아버지와 함께 집 앞에 앉아 있거나 동네 아저씨와 더불어 낚시를 갈 수 있기를 꼭 바란다.

장례식에서는 슬픔을, 명절에는 기쁨을 느끼기를.

네가 야구공을 던져 이웃의 유리창을 깼을 땐 네 엄마가 너를 혼내주고, 성탄절에 네 손으로 만든 회반죽 인형을 엄마에게 선물했을 땐 네 엄마가 널 껴안고 뽀뽀해 주기를 바란다.

이 모든 것들은 너를 위하여 내가 소망하는 것이다 -- 험난한 시절과 낙담, 힘든 일과 행복 -- 그런 것들 말이다. 내게 있어서는, 그게 인생을 감사히 여기는 유일한 길이란다.

My Wish for My Grandchildren

We tried so hard to make things better for our kids that we made them worse.

For my grandchildren, I'd like better.

I hope you learn humility by being humiliated, and that you learn honesty by being cheated.

I hope you learn to make your own bed and mow the lawn, and wash the car. And I really hope nobody gives you a brand new car when you are sixteen.

It will be good if at least one time you can see puppies born and your old dog put to sleep.

I hope you get a black eye fighting for something you believe in.

I hope you have to share a bedroom with your younger brother. And it's all right if you have to draw a line down the middle of the room, but when he wants to crawl under the covers with you because he's scared, I hope you let him.

When you want to see a movie and your little brother wants to tag along, I hope you'll let him.

If you want a slingshot, I hope your Dad teaches you how to make one instead of buying one.

I hope you learn to dig in the dirt and read books.

When you learn to use computers, I hope you also learn to add and subtract in your head.

I hope you get teased by your friends when you have your first crush on a girl, and when you talk back to your mother that you learn what ivory soap tastes like.

May you skin your knee climbing a mountain, burn your hand on a stove and stick your tongue on a frozen flagpole.

I don't care if you try a beer once, but I hope you don't like it.

And if a friend offers you dope or a joint, I hope you realize he is not your friend.

I sure hope you make time to sit on a porch with your Grandpa and go fishing with your Uncle.

May you feel sorrow at a funeral and joy during the holidays.

I hope your mother punishes you when you throw a baseball through your neighbor's window and that she hugs you and kisses you at Christmas time when you give her a plaster mold of your hand.

These things I wish for you -- tough times and disappointment, hard work and happiness.

To me, it's the only way to appreciate life.
