가을에 인디언들이 자기네 추장에게 올 겨울이 추울 것인지 아닌지를 여쭤보았다. 추장은 사실 정답을 알 수 없었지만, 추운 겨울이 올 것이니 그에 대비하기 위하여 마을 사람들은 땔나무를 모아 두어야한다고 대답하였다.

전화 받은 직원이 대답하였다, "올 겨울은 진짜 꽤나 추울 겁니다."

그러자 추장이 돌아와서 백성들에게 한층 더 많은 장작을 준비하여야한다고 독려하였다. 일 주일 후, 그가 다시 기상청에 문의하였다, "올 겨울이 엄청 추울 예정인가요?"

"그렇습니다," 직원이 대답하였다, "혹독하게 추운 겨울이 될 겁니다."

그러자 추장이 돌아와서 백성들에게 다들 나가서 나무 부스러기 하나라도 남김없이 찾아내라고 명령하였다. 2 주일 뒤, 그가 또다시 기상청에 문의하였다: "올 겨울이무지하게 추울 거라고 절대적으로 확신하십니까?"

"확실하다마다요," 직원이 대답하였다, "인디언들이 미친듯이 땔감을 모으고 있는걸요!"

Cold Winter

The Indians asked their Chief in autumn if the winter was going to be cold or not. Not really knowing an answer, the chief replies that the winter was going to be cold and that the members of the village were to collect wood to be prepared.

Being a good leader, he then went to the next phone booth and called the National Weather Service and asked, "Is this winter to be cold?"

The man on the phone responded, "This winter is going to be quite cold indeed."

So the Chief went back to speed up his people to collect even more wood to be prepared. A week later he called the National Weather Service again, "Is it going to be a very cold winter?"

"Yes", the man replied, "it's going to be a very cold winter."

So the Chief goes back to his people and orders them to go and find every scrap of wood they can find. Two weeks later he calls the National Weather Service again: "Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?"

"Absolutely," the man replies, "the Indians are collecting wood like crazy!"
