시드와 바니가 얼른 골프 한 게임 하고 오자며 나갔다. 그들은 시간이 많지 않아서, 9 홀만 치기로 했다. 시드가 바니에게 말했다, "적어도 우리 둘 중 하나에게 가치있는 시간이 되도록, 오늘지는 사람이 5 달러 내기로 하지." 바니도 찬성했고 그들은 신나게 시합을 즐겼다.
8 번 홀이 끝났을 때까지는 바니가 1 타 앞서 있었는데, 9 번 홀에서 그가 깎아친 공이 러프에 들어가 버렸다.

"내 공 찾는 걸 도와줘; 그 쪽을 좀 살펴봐 줘," 바니가 시드에게 말했다. 5 분이 지나도록 둘은 공을 찾지 못 하였다. 그런데 공이 없어지면 벌타를 4 개나 먹게 되므로, 바니는 자기 호주머니에서 공 하나를 몰래 꺼내어 땅에 떨어뜨렸다. "내 공 찾았어!" 그는 의기양양 소리쳤다.

시드가 실망스럽다는듯 그를 쳐다보았다, "우린 여러 해 친구로 지내왔는데, 그까짓 5 달러 때문에 골프로 나를 속여?"

"속이다니 무슨 소리야? 내 공이 바로 여기 있었던 걸 찾아낸 건데!"

"게다가 거짓말까지!" 시드가 어처구니없다는 듯 말했다, "내가 지난 5 분 내내 네 공을 밟고 서 있었단 걸 알려줘야겠구만!"

Cheating

Sid and Barney head out for a quick round of golf. Since they are short on time, they decide to play only 9 holes. Sid says to Barney, "Let's say we make the time worth the while, at least for one of us, and spot $5 on the lowest score for the day." Barney agrees and they enjoy a great game.

After the 8th hole, Barney is ahead by 1 stroke, but cuts his ball into the rough on the 9th.

"Help me find my ball; you look over there," he says to Sid. After 5 minutes, neither has had any luck, and since a lost ball carries a four-point penalty, Barney pulls a ball from his pocket and tosses it to the ground. "I've found my ball!" he announces triumphantly.

Sid looks at him forlornly, "After all the years we've been friends, you'd cheat me on golf for a measly five bucks?"

"What do you mean cheat? I found my ball sitting right here!"

"And a liar, too!" Sid says with amazement. "I'll have you know I've been standing on your ball for the last five minutes!"
