어느 날 오후 향군회관에서 나이든 퇴역군인 세 사람이 자기네 조상들의 영웅적 공훈에 관하여 떠벌이고 있었다.

 

"우리 증조부께선 13살 때," 하나가 자랑스레 말을 꺼냈다, "샤일로 전투에서 북치는 소년이었다네."

 

"우리 증조부는," 둘째 사람이 으스대며 말했다, "커스터 장군과 더불어 리틀빅혼 전투에 나가셨다네."

 

"우리 가문에서 내가 유일한 군인이긴 하지만," 세 번째 퇴역군인이 털어놓았다, "만약 우리 증조부께서 오늘날 살아계셨더라면 세상에서 최고로 유명한 분이실 텐데."

 

"정말? 그 분은 뭘 하셨는데?" 친구들이 궁금해하였다.

 

"머 대단한 일을 하신 건 아냐. 하지만 연세가 165 세 되셨을 테니까 말야."

A trio of old veterans were bragging about the heroic exploits of their ancestors one afternoon down at the VFW hall.

 

"My great grandfather, at age 13," one declared proudly, "was a drummer boy at Shiloh."

 

"Mine," boasts another, "went down with Custer at the Battle of Little Big Horn."

 

"I'm the only soldier in my family," confessed vet number three, "but if my great grandfather was living today he'd be the most famous man in the world."

 

"Really? What'd he do?" his friends wanted to know.

 

"Nothing much. But he would be 165 years old."
