신께서 어떻게 유태인들에게 십계명을 주게 되었는지에 관한 잘 알려지지 않은 이야기... 

신께서 처음엔 이집트 사람들에게 가서 계명을 받고 싶으냐고 물으시었다. 그들이 "그게 뭔데요?" 하고 묻자, 신께서 대답하시기를, "그게 말이다, 예를 들면 '간음하지 말라' 같은 거란다." 

이집트인들이 생각을 좀 해보고서 말했다, "말도 안 돼요, 그랬다간 우리의 주말을 망쳐놓을 테니까요." 

그래서 신께서 다음엔 아씨리아 사람들에게 가서 계명을 받고 싶으냐고 물으셨다. 그들도 역시 "계명이란 게 뭔데요?" 하고 물었다. 신께서 말씀하시기를, "에, 그건 '도둑질하지 말라' 같은 거란다." 

아씨리아인들은 즉시 대답하였다, "말도 안 돼요. 그랬다간 우리의 경제가 파탄날 거예요." 

그리하여 신께서는 결국 유태인들에게 가셔서 계명을 받고 싶냐고 물으시었다. 유태인들이 "그게 얼마짜린데요?" 하고 물으니, 신께서 "공짜란다" 하고 말씀하셨다. 

유태인들이 말했다, "아주 좋군요! 열 개만 주세요!"

Ten Commandments 

This is a little known tale of how God came to give the Jews the Ten Commandments. 

God first went to the Egyptians and asked them if they would like a commandment. "What's a commandment?" they asked. "Well, it's like, THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT ADULTERY," replied God. 

The Egyptians thought about it and then said, "No way, that would ruin our weekends." 

So then God went to the Assyrians and asked them if they would like a commandment. They also asked, "What's a commandment?" "Well," said God, "It's like, THOU SHALT NOT STEAL." 

The Assyrians immediately replied, "No way. That would ruin our economy." 

So finally God went to the Jews and asked them if they wanted a commandment. They asked, "How much?" God said, "They're free." 

The Jews said, "Great! We'll take TEN!"
