호주의 시드니를 여행중인 한 스위스인이 두 사람의 현지인이 기다리고 있는 어떤 버스정류장에서 차를 멈췄다. " [독일어로] 실례합니다, 독일어 하실 줄 아세요?" 그가 물었다.

두 호주인은 그를 빤히 쳐다보기만 할 뿐이었다.

" [프랑스어로] 실례지만, 불어 하십니까?" 그가 시험해 보았다.

두 사람은 계속 째려보았다.

" [이태리어로] 이탈리아어 하세요?"

반응이 없었다.

" [스페인어로] 스페인어는 하세요?"

여전히 무반응.

스위스인은 몹씨 기분이 잡친듯, 차를 몰고 가버렸다. 첫 호주인이 둘째 호주인에게 말했다, "거봐, 우리도 외국어 하나쯤 배워 두는 게 좋겠어."

"무슨 소리야?" 둘째 호주인이 말했다. "아까 그 친구는 4개국어나 알지만, 아무 도움도 안 되던걸."

A Swiss guy visiting Sydney, Australia, pulls up at a bus stop where two locals are waiting. "Entschuldigung, koennen Sie Deutsch sprechen?" he asks.

The two Aussies just stare at him.

"Excusez-moi, parlez vous Francais?" he tries.

The two continue to stare.

"Parlare Italiano?"

No response.

"Hablan ustedes Espanol?"

Still nothing.

The Swiss guy drives off, extremely disgusted. The first Aussie turns to the second and says, "Y'know, maybe we should learn a foreign language."

"Why?" says the other. "That guy knew four languages, and it didn't do him any good."
