상식은 건실한 재정운영 방침 (버는 것 이상으로 쓰지 말라), 신뢰 깊은 부모 노릇 (책임은 아이들에게가 아니라 어른들에게 있다), 꼭 일등만이 능사가 아니라 이등을 해도 괜찮다 등등의 단순함에 기대어 살았다.

산업혁명, 대 공황, 기술혁명 등을 통하여 백전노장의 경험을 쌓은 상식은, 신체에 구멍을 뚫는 짓, 통일 언어, "신종 수학" 등의 온갖 잡동사니들이 난무하는 세상에서도 꿋꿋이 살아남았으나, "한 사람에게만 이롭다면 그건 가치 있는 일이다."라는 바이러스에 감염되면서 건강이 쇠퇴하기 시작하였다.

급우에게 키스했다고 성추행으로 고발된 여섯 살 배기 소년, 점심식사 후 구강청량제를 꿀꺽꿀꺽 마셨다고 정학을 당한 10대, 버릇 나쁜 학생을 꾸짖었다고 해고당한 교사 등에 관한 보도들이 그의 건강을 악화시켰다. 학생에게 아스피린을 복용시키기 위해서는 학교 측이 부모의 동의를 얻어야하지만, 여학생이 임신하여 낙태를 원할 때는 부모에게 알리면 안 된다는 결정이 내려졌을 때 그의 건강은 한층 더 나빠졌다.

Death of Common Sense

We mourn the passing of an old friend, Common Sense. Common Sense lived a long life but died from heart failure on the brink of the new millennium. No one really knows how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He selflessly devoted his life to service in schools, hospitals, homes, factories helping folks get jobs done without fanfare and foolishness. For decades, petty rules, silly laws, and frivolous lawsuits held no power over Common Sense. He was credited with cultivating such valued lessons as to know when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, and that life is not always fair.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn), reliable parenting strategies (the adults are in charge, not the kids), and it's okay to come in second.

A veteran of the Industrial Revolution, the Great Depression, and the Technological Revolution, Common Sense survived trends including body piercing, whole language, and "new math." But his health declined when he became infected with the "If-it-only-helps-one-person-it's-worth-it" virus.

Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate, a teen suspended for taking a swig of mouthwash after lunch, and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student only worsened his condition. It declined even further, when schools had to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student but could not inform the parent when a female student was pregnant or wanted an abortion.

Recently, his waning strength proved no match for the ravages of well intentioned but overbearing regulations. He watched in pain as self-seeking lawyers ruled good people, Corporate CEO's defrauded investors, and then declared bankruptcy. His health rapidly deteriorated when schools endlessly implemented zero-tolerance policies, and overweight man in New York took legal action against the "Fast Food" restaurants that he frequented on a daily basis for his obesity.

Finally, when Federal Judge's ruled that "In God We Trust" is unconstitutional, Common Sense threw in the towel.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. Two stepbrothers survive him: My Rights, and Ima Whiner.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.
